A Very Versatile and Eco-friendly Material – White Lined Chipboard
Also known as simply whiteline chip, this particular material is made of 100% recycled paper pulp. The base material is actually grey board, a name that stems from the colour of the paperboard. It becomes white lined chipboard when coated with a layer of white clay. Other names for this material are clay coated white back paperboard (CCNB) and duplex board.
What is white lined chipboard used for?
This material is very popular in the manufacture of folding paper boxes as well as litho-laminated cartons. It is therefore a very popular material for the packaging of various products. It can be made in an almost endless variety of shapes and sizes and is usually no more than 0.6mm thick. Other thicknesses can be created by gluing layers together.
The Manufacture of Whiteline Chip
A variety of materials go into making this material. The base material is made using paper pulp, usually with a high percentage of newsprint. This is what gives it the grey appearance. Various additives can be added to the pulp to change the colour, properties and finish of the end product. A brown finish can be achieved by adding brown coloured dye. A more moisture resistant finish can be achieved by adding a sizing agent.
How Eco-friendly is it really?
It is in fact one of the most environmentally friendly packaging materials and very much maligned. Responsible manufacturers produce the material using 100% recycled paper that is made into a pulp and then formed into jumbo reels. Because of this anything made using this material can be recycled.
