What Is Die Cutting?

Die cutting is a manufacturing process that uses a specialised tool or die fitted to a machine that presses the required shape from various chipboards. Preparing the die to turn a three-dimensional package into a two-dimensional flattened template relies on a great deal of skill and accuracy.

Die cutting can create highly complex cardboard shapes and uses a process known as knifing to include apertures, tear strips and tamper-proof seals. Scored lines are incorporated to allow the cardboard shape to be speedily folded into the finished carton.

Die Cut Paperboard

Die cut paperboard is used for thousands of packaging solutions.

The food industry relies on die cutting to create paperboard sleeves for pre-prepared meals, cartons for cereals and decorative cardboard boxes for chocolates. Die cut apertures or windows in elaborate designs are frequently used to give consumers a glimpse of the tasty product inside.

Cartons made from cardboard are perfect for maintaining the hygiene standards used in the supermarket and fast food industries. Strong Kraft paperboard can be used to withstand grease or moisture and white-lined chipboard is ideal for biscuits and cakes.

A complex three-dimensional packaging structure can be produced from a single die cut template.

The retail industry uses complicated die cut templates to create cartons with ledges, windows and recesses. Toys in particular benefit from attractive die cut packaging of brightly printed grey-lined cardboard.

Even integral boxed sections that hold small items or spare parts can be folded and held in place with die cut tabs and slots. Household products can be presented in a displayed form using packaging folded into shape using one die cut template and sheets of sturdy laminated cardboard.

Embossed Packaging

Embossed packaging is easily achieved through the die cutting technique.

The cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries frequently turn to embossed cardboard packaging where raised lettering can be foil blocked to help consumers recognise their brand more easily. Embossing is particularly effective for the packaging of healthcare products that are legally required to include raised Braille lettering.

Die cut cardboard is invaluable for medicinal products that need to be stored safely. The die cutting process can include perforated strips and seals to keep tablets secure until they are required.

Die cutting is a swift and cost effective method of producing versatile packaging for many industries. To find out more about die cut cardboard solutions, please contact us at Preston Board on 01772 254 187 or email sales@prestonboard.co.uk.
